As we approach the warmer weather and longer days, we’ll begin to see more and more leisure activity across the Cattewater.
In a stark reminder of what can go wrong, usually when you are not expecting it, we wanted to share this video (with permissions) of the importance of wearing the appropriate life saving equipment including kill cords when out on the water in a vessel.
This incident occurred at Oreston Quay slipway late last year – the person on the boat, and bystanders on the quay, are all very lucky to still be alive. It was by sheer luck that the area shown wasn’t being used by other water users at the time. Slipways are for the launch and recovery of craft, and others should be aware of the risks in and around the slipways at all times.
The video shows how quickly events can change, and on this occasion, no one lost their life, due to luck, and the swift medical response of the public, and emergency services.
It can’t be said enough, but thank you to the first responders, harbour staff and blue light services who all attended this particular incident.
The RYA has many resources on the importance of wearing kill cords, and this video is just one example of what can go wrong in a split second.
