Cattewater Harbour Open Day 2025

5 Sep 2025

Cattewater Harbour will be holding an Open Day on Saturday 13th September (11am until 3pm) to coincide with Plymouth Waterfront Partnership’s Seafest.

Members of the harbour team, Commissioners and local businesses will be on hand during the day to answer any questions about the port and the work that we do. The Cattewater Harbour fleet will be berthed on the Barbican Landing Stage, with vessels including pilot vessel Stamford and tug Prince Rock, open for visitors to step onboard to find out more the vital role they each play in ensuring the harbour runs safely and efficiently 365 days a year.

The Harbour Office will also be open throughout the day, and visitors are encouraged to make their way up to the Boardroom* to view videos, examples of cargo that is transported into and out of the Cattewater, the commercial port of Plymouth, each year, and speak to members of the harbour team and Commissioners.

A stakeholder boat trip will mark the beginning of the Open Day where Harbour Master and CEO Captain Richard Allan will provide commentary to invited guests as they sail up, and back the Cattewater. During this trip Richard will also discuss the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners’ Sustainability Strategy and the recently launched Sustainability Fund.

The Cattewater Harbour’s Sustainability Fund is open to any individual, business or group who may need financial support to support local activities and initiatives and that which align with the Cattewater Harbour Commissioners’ Trust port status and Vision. The aim of the Sustainability Fund is to encourage improvements in the three areas of sustainability – Environment, Economics and Equity/Social. The fund complements the Commissioners’ already existing Community Benefit Fund.

During the Open Day there will be demonstrations from local marine autonomy businesses, life-saving exercises with man-overboard drills and the opportunity to find out more about BluGreens, who are currently working with the Cattewater Harbour team to farm seaweed using vacant moorings during the winter period. The Ships’ Project will be available to talk about their fascinating maritime archaeology finds.

Visitors to the Open Day will also have the opportunity to get close to the famous Jolie Brise, the first ever winner of the historic Fastnet race. The Jolie Brise will be berthed on the Barbican Landing Stage.

Kim Downer, interim CEO, Plymouth Waterfront Partnership:

“I’m really delighted that Cattewater Harbour are hosting a Port Open Day to coincide with the Saturday of Seafest.

Seafest is a celebration of the sea so having the Harbour Master and his team available to talk about the exciting and interesting work of the harbour, show off their fleet and discuss their future plans during the festival is excellent news.”

Cattewater Harbour Open Day will be held on Saturday 13th September from 11am until 3pm – the event is free to attend, and visitors are encouraged to visit the Barbican Landing Stage and Harbour Office (next to Tourist Information Centre) to find out more about the vital work the team does within the commercial port of Plymouth.

* Please note that due to the age of the Harbour Office there is no lift in the building.
