Cattewater Harbour Commissioners mark World Maritime Day with new Sustainability Strategy

25 Sep 2025

To coincide with World Maritime Day, Cattewater Harbour Commissioners (CHC) have today announced the launch of their new Sustainability Strategy. This strategy demonstrates the Commissioners’ commitment to safeguarding the marine environment and supporting a greener, more sustainable and resilient Cattewater Harbour.

CHC’s new Sustainability Strategy outlines a clear pathway for the harbour to evolve and focuses on three themes: People, Planet, and Prosperity.

CHC have developed the Sustainability Strategy to:

  • Define the way Cattewater Harbour will operate and grow to achieve the Commissioners’ Vision of an enduring Trust port
  • Provide guardrails for Commissioners and stakeholders to specify tactical actions to achieve sustainability
  • Confirm the principles used to drive risk-based change.

The CHC Sustainability Strategy will be maintained and updated as applicable in response to the harbour’s dynamic context and evolving stakeholder opportunities and challenges.

Lisa Lewis, Security and Sustainability Director, Cattewater Harbour:

“Our newly launched Sustainability Strategy is an ambitious and necessary roadmap for how we’ll continue to support, and help grow, the region’s economy whilst also becoming a more sustainable port.”

The Commissioners have also created a dedicated Sustainability Fund with an annual total value of £15,000. This new fund is designed to provide financial support to local individuals, businesses, and groups undertaking projects that align with the Sustainability Strategy’s core themes: People, Planet and Prosperity.

Applications will be reviewed by CHC’s Board, with successful projects announced here on the website.

Cattewater Harbour Commissioners are the statutory and competent harbour authority for the commercial port of Plymouth. As a Trust Port, their mandate is to manage the harbour for the long-term benefit of its users, the community, and the environment; ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the harbour whilst also promoting sustainable growth.

The Cattewater Harbour Commissioners’ Sustainability Strategy is a proactive step in balancing commercial activities with sustainable development for the benefit of all stakeholders.
