To mark Maritime UK Week today we’d like to put the career spotlight on Cameron Hicks, our Harbour Assistant.
Cameron was brought up on the Isles of Scilly and was involved with maritime from a young age, he was driving boats before cars!
He worked at the local RYA Centre first as a beach assistant before moving on to RYA Powerboat Instructor and then as commercial skipper (<24m LOA, 20NM offshore). This experience gained Cameron freelance work with a range of roles including with a freight transport company, safety boat skipper and marshall work.
Cameron left the Isles to study A-Levels (as there is no Post-16 provision on the islands), came to Plymouth to study Navigation and Maritime Science at the University of Plymouth and headed back home each summer for work and to gain more maritime experience.
Cameron joined the team here at Cattewater Harbour Commissioners in July 2019 on placement as part of his degree. We were so impressed by Cameron that when his year was complete we offered him a full time position as a Harbour Assistant with the ability to continue his studies.
Cameron now works full time here with us and is completing a distance learning degree in BSc (Hons) Sustainable Maritime Operations at MLA College.
As well as Harbour Assistant and completing distance learning, Cameron is also a member of our local lifeboat crew – you may have seen footage from RNLI Plymouth’s ‘CamCam’ over the summer with local rescues!
Maritime UK Week has been organised as an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the UK’s maritime sector, its role and future. It follows a period where the maritime sector’s role as the fundamental enabler of trade and critical freight supplies into the country were reasserted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
