Mooring management and maintenance improvements

25 Apr 2025

We have recently made improvements to our mooring management and maintenance operations to provide an even safer and more efficient service across the harbour.

Over the last year we’ve focused on updating and streamlining our mooring management processes by investing in new technology and software, and improving the infrastructure and actual physical management of them.

To assist the team in day-to-day operations we’ve invested in two new pieces of software: SeaFlux and Harbour Assist.

  • SeaFlux allows for accurate inspection tracking of our mooring assets, helping us to stay proactive with maintenance and monitor wear and tear of our harbour-maintained assets including our harbour fleet
  • Harbour Assist helps us improve communications, task management and record keeping with harbour visitors, whether residential mooring holders or day/overnight leisure trippers making use of the Barbican Landing Stage, Mayflower Pontoon or the two visitor pontoons in the Cattewater.

Alongside the digital updates, we’ve also made physical upgrades with the introduction of a new crane to support our annual mooring maintenance programme. The new piece of equipment, which has an increased lifting capacity, enables our harbour team to inspect and repair moorings in a shorter period of time, not only further improving safety measures but also minimising disruption for mooring holders.

Our Harbour Patrol team have been key in supporting these efforts, ensuring every mooring is secure and in good working order before the busy season begins.

Shaun Brett, Harbour Officer:

“Investing in the new equipment has enabled us to achieve faster turnarounds and work even more efficiently throughout the winter and early spring when the weather is not always on our side. We’re really pleased how these investments, both in the software and equipment, have ensured our moorings checks are even more thorough than before.”

Lee Shaw, Harbour Operative adds:

“The software has really changed the way we plan and achieve our mooring maintenance schedule for both the actual moorings in the Cattewater and our harbour fleet – it’s a really streamlined process now.”

To prevent breakoffs and reduce environmental and navigational risks, we have also taken on a number of previously self-maintained moorings and brought them under our official harbour maintenance programme. This ensures consistent upkeep and safer moorings across the Cattewater especially in high-traffic and high-exposure areas.

Dave Hole, Harbour Officer and Cattewater Harbour’s longest serving member of staff says:

“Taking on a number of previously self-maintained moorings means standards across the Cattewater will be more consistent, ensuring less risk of mooring failures and safer for all vessels using the Cattewater.”

Cattewater Harbour will continue to invest in the systems and equipment that keeps our harbour safe and operational for all harbour users.
