Plymouth welcomes Fugro Frontier

15 Dec 2025

Fugro Frontier, one of Fugro’s geophysical vessels, will be alongside on the Barbican Landing Stage on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th December.

The Fugro Frontier is a multi-purpose, diesel-electric research/survey vessel. The 54-metre vessel is designed to support a wide range of offshore services, primarily geophysical and geotechnical surveys.

Fugro has a state-of-the-art training facility based in Turnchapel Wharf, the UK’s home of maritime autonomy. The Plymouth Fugro Academy runs a range of programmes including the world’s first IMCA approved ROV Training Programme and Applied Hydrographic Survey Programme.

Following a pilot programme, the Academy also runs the USV Remote Operator Course, a course recognised by the MCA for delivering Generic Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) Remote Operator Training, in accordance with MGN 703. Fugro is the first commercial company in the world to achieve this. Cattewater Harbour Commissioner Ian Offland has recently successfully completed this course.

Chris Ord, Fugro’s Senior Remote Operations Trainer, said:

”Achieving alignment and formal recognition from the MCA for our USV Remote Operators Course is a significant milestone. It demonstrates that Fugro is not only committed to advancing the future of remote operations but is actively shaping it.”

With Plymouth named as the National Centre for Marine Autonomy earlier this year, Fugro, and other marine autonomy businesses based at Turnchapel Wharf continue to be at the forefront of this fast-evolving sector.

During her visit, the crew of Fugro Frontier will be welcoming visitors onboard to find out more about this impressive vessel and how she operates.
